Catholic Social Ministry Gathering 2015

I had the wonderful pleasure of attending the Catholic Social Ministry Gathering on February 7-10, 2015 in Washington, D.C. There were several things I liked about the conference that proved beneficial to my growth spiritually and professionally.

The opportunity to network with other attendees was immensely enjoyable. I talked with both individuals who were leaders and innovators in their local communities, as well as individuals who were active on global levels. I shared my ideas and aspirations and got advice on how to effect change in my local community. I was also blessed to meet students from all over the country and world, including Georgia, Ohio, Maryland, and Australia. It was great to meet other students who were just as passionate about social justice as I am. I was able to share with them my own ideas and hear about the projects of their local Catholic Relief Services. Many of the student leaders touched my life. For example, one specific student who was disabled used her physical state as a platform to advocate for other disabled people. She was the most heartwarming and encouraging person.

Our daily workshops and presentations throughout the conference came to fruition once we visited Capitol Hill. I had the opportunity to speak directly with Louisiana politicians and the staff of our representatives. Our delegation included students from Xavier University of Louisiana, a few priests and myself. In the meeting, we advocated for a more streamlined reform for immigration policies, a peaceful two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, and the sustainment of Nutritional programs like WIC and SNAP. Having the opportunity to advocate for issues that have directly impacted myself and loved ones is something that I will cherish.

I have always aspired to be the hands and feet of Jesus to others. The Catholic Social Ministry Gathering has given me insight on how to do just that. I experienced a personal change in my own mindset and heart. Since the gathering I have become more motivated and passionate about ideas that I need

to work on in my community. I want to start several programs for students in my hometown, and I am indebted to the Catholic Social Ministry Gathering for giving me a new drive to pursue this endeavor.

A scripture passage from Matthew’s Gospel remains close to my heart:

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in. I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me... whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." -Matthew 25:35-36, 40

I pray that I may live in service to my fellow man in whatever capacity God leads me so that I may truly serve God.
